When you’re buying a car just for yourself, your only limit is usually budget. Most people will usually choose something that they like the look of, and that feels nice to drive. But when you have children and you’re on the hunt for a car for the entire family, it can get a little trickier. There are more factors than just looks to take into consideration, and the more items on your checklist you have the harder it can be to find something that’s just right. To make it a little easier, we’ve put the spotlight on one vehicle which ticks all the boxes for families- and is a vehicle well worth considering. Meet the Subaru Tribeca!

Space

An MPV or SUV is always going to give you the added benefit of space, which is useful when it comes to busy family life. Even if you only have one or two children, the five or seven seats (depending on the model you pick) gives you the freedom to be able to pick up friends and family members or your children’s friends without having to make multiple trips. There’s also space for the family dogs too! The Subaru Tribeca is a mid sized ‘crossover,’ so while it’s classed as an SUV, it’s spacious without being as colossal in size as some other models. Therefore it’s easier to park get around (especially in urban areas) than a lot of other SUVs. One model comes complete with a moonroof, which also helps it to feel bigger and brighter inside too. The trunk is huge, ideal for large grocery shops, for prams, kids bikes, bringing flatpack furniture home from the store- and everything else you need for family life. The back seats fold down giving further space too if you need it. If you’ve been squashing the family into a hatchback for years, this larger space really is a game changer and can make life much easier.

Handling and Comfort

As well as being a smaller SUV meaning it’s easier to park, there are also some great features that make the handling on the Tribeca a model worth considering. From a power driver and passenger seat to an efficient turning radius and heated leather upholstered seats, it’s as easy to drive as it is comfortable. Long road trips with the family require a comfortable car, not only does the Subaru Tribeca give you space but it’s comfortable for the driver as well as the passengers. Although it has a ‘sports utility vehicle’ title, don’t be put off if you don’t plan on off roading. Many of today’s models are actually far better suited to busy built up areas and freeways anyway.

Affordable and Economical

Going back to the size, the smaller size of the Subaru Tribeca means it’s not only more affordable to buy than many larger SUVs, but it’s also cheaper to run too. This vehicle can be purchased with 3.0 and 3.6 engine sizes, bearing in mind that some SUVs and other similar vehicles go up to six-litre engines. Family life can be expensive, anyone with kids will tell you that raising them doesn’t come cheap. So a more affordable, economic vehicle is never going to be a bad thing. Subaru is still a luxury brand, and so it can’t be considered ‘cheap’  or ‘inexpensive,’ however compared with vehicles like Land Rover Discovery, Jaguar F-Pace, Porche Macan and other SUVs the Subaru Tribeca works out cheaper to buy. Whether you’ve saved for years or are planning on getting finance to fund the purchase, a lower price tag is a huge bonus.

Safety Features

Safety is an important thing to look at when it comes to any car, but especially a family car. When you have babies and young children on board they are particularly vulnerable in crashes, so you will want to choose a vehicle with plenty of safety features for peace of mind. The Subaru Tribeca boasts six airbags. This includes two for the front passengers, two side impact airbags (which deploy from the outer edge of the front seats) and side curtain airbags. How Stuff Works suggests these are particularly beneficial to have, as in the event of a crash causing the car to roll over you’re much more likely to survive. Automatic braking, electronic stability control, and a rear vision camera come as standard on the Subaru Tribeca. On top of this you have advanced seat belt reminders which are fitted to both front seats. Other features include front seat belt buckles which are mounted on the seats, as well as the upper anchorages being adjustable- this improves the fit of the seat belt. Plus, pretensioners are fitted to the front seat belts to reduce slack in the event of a crash so seatbelt wise it really does perform well. A three point seat belt (providing better protection than a two point seat belt) is fitted to the centre rear seat.

Reliability

The Subaru Tribeca is considered to be a reliable vehicle, according to research most repairs on these vehicles over a year were minimal and inexpensive- only a small number of people needed repairs costing over $1000. You could always use a specialist like Mick’s Auto Subaru service to quickly and easy get to the route of any issues, as well as to have your car services done. Using a specialist who knows the make of your car is advisable as opposed to a generic car garage,. The last thing you need when you’re doing the school run, picking your kids up from an extra- curricular class or driving to work is a breakdown, so a vehicle that’s proven to be reliable makes it a particularly good family choice.

So there you have it; if you’re looking for a vehicle that’s not too tough on the wallet while being nice to drive, spacious, safe and reliable, then you won’t go far wrong with this. With its size and the fact that it’s more of a crossover vehicle it’s a little more of an unusual choice, but one that shouldn’t be overlooked all the same.

History

The Subaru Forester has been at the top of the crossover SUV game since 1997 when the first generation of the car went into production. Indeed, not only has it been at the top of the game; it also contributed to the game existing first place. When the car was debuted way back in the mid-nineties, it was recognized as one of the first such vehicles. The model has been through several generations since then. The first generation lasted from 1997 – 2002. The second had a six-year lifespan, from 2002 – 2008; the third generation from 2008 – 2013; and now, the fourth generation, the latest, which was presented in 2014.

Under the Hood

When it comes to these types of vehicles, it’s all about what’s under the hood. Remember: this car isn’t just for running errands around town, it’s also for those long getaways, where you might be taking on terrain that you don’t normally drive through. The car has to have the power to get through this moments unscathed, and that’s just what the Forester is capable of, thanks to its impressive engine. There’s a 2.5-litre engine that is capable of delivering 170hp and 174lb of torque. The transmission is a 6-speed manual, which is ideal for navigating those steep terrains you’ll find yourself on.

Driving Styles

As we said, this vehicle isn’t just for nipping about town. It’s also for adventure. The twin turbo engine makes it more than comfortable driving through terrain that other cars would find hazardous, but it’s also got all the steering capabilities to drive around the neighborhood without any difficulty. If you’re looking for a car that allows you to drive sensibly and safely wherever you find yourself, then the Forester might be the car for you.

Parking Like a Pro

We all know how frustrating it can be to finally find a parking space, only to have a moment of self-doubt: do we really have the required driving skills to park this car in that pretty tight space? The answer, when you have the Subaru, is yes. This is because they have rear view mirrors installed. You’ll be able to see what’s right behind you. There’ll be no reason to hit that static parking bollard anymore! Unfortunately, this does give you no excuse to fall back on, but hey ho, you can’t have everything in life.

Safety First

One of the most important aspects of any vehicle is how safe it is. This is especially true when you take a vehicle like an SUV, which can be used in equal measure when you’re transporting the kids around and when you’re out having fun. You never know what might lie around the next bend, or when you might come across something hazardous when you’re driving around town. The Forester is well equipped to deal with these potential dangers. It has a system called the Vehicle Dynamics Control, which assists the driver when it comes to sudden stopping. There are also things called blind-spot monitoring, which means you won’t be surprised by anything nasty when you’re out on the road. Overall, this vehicle received five out five for safety, making it one of its main attributes. There are seven airbags in total so that you and your passengers can stay safe.

For the Family

This car is one for the whole family, from the youngest child right up to the grandparents. One of the main reasons for this is because the doors open big and wide, making it easy for people to get in and out of. If you have a parent who has a wheelchair or other mobility issues, they’ll find it easier to get in the car before you go for a drive. There are five seats in total, which means you can pack in everyone comfortably and all go on an adventure, without having to leave anyone behind!

Trims

The vehicle is available in a number of trims. These are: 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Limited, 2.5i Touring, 2.0XT Premium, and 2.0XT Touring. As you can expect, the further up the trim level you go, the more you’ll get – but of course, there’s a higher cost involved. The base, entry level of the Forester actually comes with a lot of features, so it’s not like you’ll be driving around an inferior vehicle. The lower rung of the trims has cloth interior, though it is possible to get a leather interior if you like having an added touch of luxury when you drive.

Driving for Longer

Nobody likes to have to stop to fill up the fuel tank too often. If you have the Subaru, then you won’t have to. Well, you will – but you’ll be getting more bang for your buck. Subaru made an extra effort to make their engine as efficient as possible, which means it’s capable of achieving 32 mpg. Of course, MPG goes beyond just what the engine is capable of: it’s also how you drive. Avoid accelerating too quickly and harsh braking, as well as maintaining a consistent speed when you’re on highways, and you’ll be going further without having to open your wallet.

Added Comfort

If you’re going to be the one driving, then good news: you won’t have to stop driving because you’re getting uncomfortable any time soon. Are you planning on having skiing adventures in the car? Then you won’t have to feel the bite of the chilly air when you’re on the road. The Forester comes with a heated steering wheel – perfect for keeping your hands warm without having to wear gloves! The seat also has a memory feature, and can be moved into a highly customizable position. Whatever size you are, you’ll be able to have the seat that’s right for you!

Those Driving Songs

OK, a car is of course about how it handles the road, but it’s also about having fun! And there’s nothing more fun than having all those great driving songs loaded up and ready to play when you hit the road. You’ll have a great sound system that’ll help you enjoy the music experience to the max. For starters, you have a number of options on where the music comes from. There’s a CD player, radio, and USB connectivity. Whatever you play, it’ll all come through the high-quality surround system; even the people in the back will be able to hear your favorite driving songs perfectly.

Multimedia Fun

And that’s not all when it comes to fun, either. In fact, it’s just the start! The Subaru has a whole multimedia system setup. For example, there’s the LCD touchscreen unit, from which you can control plenty of areas within the car. If you go for one of the higher trims, then you’ll have Starlink: this is a sophisticated unit which comes with bags of features that help you to stay safe on the road.

Ready for Adventure

The handling and power of the vehicle make it perfect for getting into the great outdoors. Indeed, this is a vehicle that was designed with one eye on adventure. This is all-wheel drive, remember, which means you can look at most destinations and think ‘yes we can go there,’ rather than ‘hmm, I don’t think our vehicle is ready for this.’ If you opt for the optional turbocharged option, you’ll have no issues anywhere, no matter how steep the terrain you’re traveling on is.

Plenty of Space

One of the key areas of the Forester is the amount of space it provides. It doesn’t just seat five people; it seats five people very comfortably indeed. Inside the cabin is large, bright, and airy. In the back of the vehicle, you’ll have enough space to pack for all your camping and recreational equipment, or you can use to pack in your weekly shopping from the supermarket.

Bottom Line

When it comes down to it, people already know what to expect from Forester. They know they’re going to get a high-quality vehicle that is jam packed with features and ready for adventure. They know this because they’ve been doing it for twenty years! Always mindful of what the general public wants, Subaru have taken their core values and added a few thrills, incorporating the latest technology, to create a car that’ll win plenty of fans.
